The dissolution of a marriage can be a stressful time that is full of heated disputes and emotional encounters. As Minnesota residents know, there are multiple factors that make a divorce a difficult process. Many divorces involve child custody and visitation, and this is often the most contentious part of a divorce for people who have children. In any case involving custody of a child, whether it takes place in Minnesota or any other state, the wellbeing of the child should be the most important consideration.
Later this year, a new Public Safety Building will open in Minnesota, and there will be a visitation area for divorced parents for supervised exchanges through the Safe Haven Visitation and Exchange Center. A divorce can be very traumatic for children and parents. The new program will support supervised visitation and safe exchange options for families with a history of violence, abuse and stalking. During the visitation times, the non-custodial parent will be monitored by staff and the dealings can be set up so the parents don’t have to interact with each other if there is a history of violent or uneasy exchanges of the child or children.
The center staff will set up the exchanges so one parent arrives at a specific time and the other parent may arrive a few minutes before or after. If there is a history of stalking, this will give time for one parent to leave the building before the other arrives. Safe Haven will also have separate entrances so parents won’t have to hear one another, as well.
Within the building, the exchange area will be completely private and closed off from the office staff so all matters remain private. To set up an exchange, individuals should call Safe Haven in advance to set up a time that will work for both parents.
Divorce is never easy for anyone involved. It is prudent for any person facing divorce to seek legal advice so he or she can fully understand the difficult issues that arise. The safety of all parties involved, especially children, must remain a top priority in this personal legal matter.
