The growing role social media is playing in many divorces

A married couple may choose to divorce for a number of reasons. Disagreements about finances, childrearing and sex often top the list of those issues that drive a couple apart. When a marriage is experiencing strain, it's not uncommon for one or both spouses to seek comfort in the arms of another man or woman.

In years past, spouses seeking opportunities to cheat may have visited a bar or turned to an acquaintance. Today, however, a growing number of infidelity-bound husbands and wives are turning to the Internet and social media websites to form virtual connections that may lead to real life intimate encounters.

One recent example of how social media can negatively impact a marriage revolves around news of the impending divorce between Seth Peterson, the star of USA Network's Burn Notice, and his wife of 12 years. Peterson's 39-year-old wife and mother of the couple's two children filed for divorce in December after learning of her husband's apparent affair with a 23-year-old woman.

Peterson reportedly met his 23-year-old love interest on the popular social media website Twitter where the two bonded over their love of zombies and poetry. Peterson and his wife have two children together. Additionally, the couple is currently expecting a third child who is due to arrive in a couple of months.

Peterson and his new love interest were apparently quite open on social media about their relationship, often referring to one another. Citing the health of her unborn child, Peterson's wife is said to want a quick and amicable divorce.

Minnesota residents who believe a spouse is cheating may find confirming evidence on social media websites. In cases where an affair or intimate relationship is discovered, a husband or wife may choose to seek the advice and assistance of a divorce attorney.
