Understanding Potential Workplace Consequences for DUI Charges

January 23, 2014 by Sheridan & Dulas, P.A.

Immediately after being charged for drunk driving, people may not fully understand what a conviction could mean for them. As we’ve previously indicated on this blog, the penalties for a drunk driving charge aren’t limited to the sentence handed down by a judge. Being convicted for driving under the influence of alcohol can also be devastating for a person’s professional life, and the importance of this topic merits further discussion.

One of the most immediate consequences of a DUI conviction is dealing with driver’s license suspension or revocation. For individuals who are required to drive in a professional capacity, this situation could be career ending.

In addition to the direct consequences of license suspension, some companies have policies addressing criminal convictions. As such, it may be incredibly important to check an employee handbook. Some employers might initiate termination proceedings if they find out about a DUI charge.

One thing to keep in mind is that Minnesota law forbids employers from asking about a job applicants’ criminal history. While it may be possible to find a job after being convicted for drunk driving, it’s important to keep in mind the potential consequences for those who are worried about existing employment.

Feeling overwhelmed by the consequences associated with DUI is understandable. However, there may be some steps worth exploring that could help mitigate the effects of conviction. For example, it may be possible to get a license exemption in order to drive to work. This might be critical for those who don’t have access to any other reliable transportation.

Knowledge can be a valuable tool when it comes to drunk driving charges. Having answers to critical questions regarding legal rights and options during this time can provide a sense of relief and an understanding of what can be done to move forward.
