Amid accusations of domestic violence, actor faces divorce and restraining order

Fans of the ABC television series "Scandal" were saddened and shocked when they recently learned that actor Columbus Short will not return for the next season of the show. While Short recently confirmed and issued a brief statement about his departure from the show, rumors are swirling as to whether he was fired or asked to resign in light of recent domestic assault allegations.

The 31-year-old actor's wife of nine years, Tanee Short, recently filed for divorce after citing irreconcilable differences. The divorce filing comes amid allegations that Short threatened her with a knife and used physical force during a domestic dispute. In response, Short stated he's been advised by his attorney to not discuss the allegations and possible pending criminal charges.

Upon filing for divorce, Tanee Short also requested a temporary restraining order against her husband that bars the actor from being near both her and their 2-year-old child, which a judge granted. Next week, a judge is set to determine whether to extend the restraining order.

It's been a difficult time for the actor who has been arrested three times within the past few months. In addition to the domestic violence arrest, the actor was also arrested after he was involved in an apparent argument on the basketball court that turned physical. The actor was also arrested when police officers responded to a fight in which he was reportedly involved in outside a bar.

In a divorce case, individuals who are accused of domestic violence would be wise to secure an attorney who handles both divorce and domestic violence cases. This is particularly important in cases where an individual has children and an ex-spouse has filed a restraining order. An attorney can work to dispute claims of domestic violence and work to ensure a mother or father is able to see and maintain a close relationship with their children.
