New Trend of Divorce Parties

June 6, 2014 by Sheridan & Dulas, P.A.

There are many important occasions in life that are worth celebrating. Some of the most notable are birthdays, anniversaries and weddings. However, some people are now making their divorce a thing of celebration. Minnesota is not immune to this trend.

These individuals do not look at it as a way of celebrating the end of a marriage, so much as commemorating a person’s newfound freedom in life after marriage. Some exes view the party as a way to focus on the next new venture in life, which will be less about marriage and more about joint parenting or co-business management, for example.

These parties, often attended by both ex-spouses, can also bring a sense of closure to the formerly married couple. Some couples even go so far as to cut a divorce cake together, similar to how they cut the wedding cake.

Divorce does not necessarily hold the same stigma that it did years ago. Couples may no longer be embarrassed to end a marriage, and go their separate ways. This difficult decision perhaps deserves recognition. Plus, there may be another reason to celebrate the divorce. Divorce settlements and negotiations can be a challenging and drawn-out process.

Divorce legal issues, like child custody and alimony, may all be part of the settlement discussions, and these are not necessarily simple matters to decide. When couples finally come to an agreement that works for them and their family, and when all of the papers are signed and filed, it may make sense to have a party.

Although, there may be many reasons to celebrate divorce, no one should undermine the seriousness of the legal process. Many important issues are determined during a divorce that can have a longstanding impact on the people involved. An attorney can help sort out these issues, including property division and custody matters, to make sure that everyone can start their new venture on sound footing.
