Man’s T-Shirt Highlights Perception Issue with DUIs

August 22, 2014 by Sheridan & Dulas, P.A.

There are plenty of news stories out there — whether they deal with serious issues or more mundane topics — that delve into the “weird.” For example, a lot of divorce stories, though they deal with the serious topic of divorce, tend to highlight some over-the-top case or some truly bizarre circumstances.

Or you could take drunk driving as another example of this. Look no further than a recent DUI case where a young man was booked on drunk driving charges — and when he was taken in to get his mug shot, he was wearing a t-shirt that displayed a previous mug shot he had.

As the kids say these days, the image quickly went “viral.” A police official who works where the mug shot was taken said there is no official policy regarding what inmates wear when they are having their mug shot taken.

We bring this story to your attention not just because it is a quirky — and very silly — story, but also because it shines a light on a certain perception of people who are accused of drunk driving: that they are, and always have been, immature or unaware people.

This simply isn’t true for many people who are accused, or even found guilty, of drunk driving. Even the most responsible people make mistakes from time to time. For people who drove drunk, they likely weren’t aware of their precise blood alcohol content. They thought they were good enough to drive, but a blood test proved otherwise.

Should they have driven after drinking? Of course not. But that doesn’t mean they are inherently bad people.
