It’s Time To Tell Your Kids About Your Divorce: Now What?

February 12, 2018 by Sheridan & Dulas, P.A.

There is never a good time to find yourself in the middle of a divorce case. Even if you realize that this is best for your future, you know that you’re sure to face a few challenges along the way.

If you have kids with your soon to be ex-spouse, you know that there are even more details to think about as your divorce pushes forward.

Before you do anything, however, you need to sit down with your kids and explain to them what is going on.

The way you approach the conversation is based largely on the age of your children. For example, a one year old won’t understand what’s going on, so there isn’t much you can say to him or her.

Here are a few tips to follow if you’re ready to tell your kids about your divorce:

  • Write down what you want to say. This is one of the better steps to take, as you want to have a clear idea in your mind as to how you will approach the subject.
  • Schedule a good time to have this discussion. Not only do you want to leave enough time in your schedule, but you should also be free of distractions.
  • Be open to answer any and all questions. You don’t want to avoid questions, as you need to help your children understand what is going on.
  • Be honest about what’s going to happen in the future. While it’s a good thing to comfort your children, you don’t want to lie to them. Be honest about how their life will change, such as if you’ll be living with them in a different home.

Telling your kids that you are going through a divorce is never easy. Even so, you still need to have this difficult conversation should the time come.

Once you get this behind you, you can turn your attention to the divorce process, how to work through your disagreements, and how to protect your legal rights.
